    My Love Affaire With Marriage

    “My Love Affair With Marriage” is the title of the new animated feature film that I’m working on, directed by Signe Baumane.

    Our past work (“Rocks in My Pockets”) brought us close to an Oscar nomination (Academy Awards)… we will try again with this exciting new film.
    Part of the cast is Matthew Modine an actor that we all know from his participation in the television series “Stranger Things”, but above all for his starring role in Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket”.

    I write because this project needs the help of you and your friends.
    The director started a fundraiser on Kickstarter – this independent animated feature cannot rely on the budgets that Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks have.
    This project is being made by having independent film fans fund the film, “pre-buying” the movie, which will ensure its production.
    Just to explain how the animation business works for feature films, to put a professional actor under contract to dub any character, no matter the budget of the film (independent or a blockbuster), the costs are the same. Consequently an independent producer must pay the same actor rates as the giants such as Disney.

    Below is a synopsis of the film in the words of the Director:
    “My Love Affair With Marriage” is based on my personal experiences – I have been married two times and could never understand why those marriages didn’t last longer than they did. To unravel this mystery, I set out to research the neuroscience and mythology of love.
    I decided to weave my many discoveries into the single story of Zelma, a fiery young woman with a wild imagination, who believes that love will make her a complete human being with four arms, four legs and two heads. Zelma keeps falling in love, but something always goes wrong. She journeys through many marriages, some real, some imaginary, while confronting pressures from society and her own biology. Although the marriages fail to make her complete, they, like baptism by fire, transform her.
    This story is driven by 26 speaking and four singing characters. The singers are the chimerical, shapeshifting Mythology Sirens, who, with their seductive songs, lure Zelma into fantasies of everlasting love and never-ending happiness.
    One of the best film composers I know is Kristian Sensini of Italy, who scored “Rocks In My Pockets”. Kristian has agreed to join us and write the songs for “My Love Affair With Marriage”, as well as score the film. It is a great honor to work with Kristian again! He is an excellent collaborator who always goes the extra mile!”

    La Mia Storia d’Amore con il Matrimonio

    Si so che il titolo suona quanto meno strano…
    E’ semplicemente la traduzione di “My Love Affair With Marriage” il nuovo film di Animazione al quale sto lavorando, diretto da Signe Baumane.
    Il passato lavoro (“Rocks in my Pockets”) ci ha portato vicini alla nomination agli Oscar (Academy Awards)…ci riproviamo con questo nuovo ed entusiasmante film.

    Farà parte del cast anche Matthew Modine (attore che tutti conosciamo per la sua partecipazione alla serie televisiva “Stranger Things”, ma soprattutto per il suo ruolo da protagonista in “Full Metal Jacket” di Kubrick).

    Vi scrivo perché questo progetto necessita del vostro aiuto e di quello dei vostri amici.
    La regista ha fatto partire una raccolta fondi su Kickstarter, l’animazione indipendente non può contare sui budget che hanno Disney, Pixar e Dreamworks. Questo progetto sta cercando di nascere e crescere dal basso, dai fan del cinema indipendente che finanziando la pellicola “pre-acquistano” il film assicurandone contemporaneamente la sua produzione. Giusto per spiegarvi come funziona il cinema di animazione negli USA, per mettere sotto contratto un attore per doppiare un qualsiasi personaggio, non importa la natura della pellicola (che sia indipendente o un blockbuster), i costi sono i medesimi. Di conseguenza un produttore indipendente deve, giocoforza, allinearsi ad i costi che affrontano colossi come la Disney.

    Di seguito la sinossi del film

    “My Love Affair With Marriage” è il nuovo progetto per un lungometraggio animato della regista e animatrice lettone (ma ormai “americana d’adozione”) Signe Baumane, basato (ancora una volta) sulla sua propria esperienza personale, questa volta riferita al matrimonio e alle innumerevoli implicazioni di questa istituzione spesso contradditoria e criticata, ma dotata tuttora di un fascino irresistibile per la maggior parte degli esseri umani.

    Per spiegarne il mistero, Baumane andrà alla ricerca delle radici della Neuroscienza e e della Mitologia amorosa. Mascherata dietro il personaggio fittizio di Zelma, ragazza indomita dotata di fervida immaginazione e convinta che l’amore la renderà infine un essere umano completo dotato di quattro braccia, quattro gambe e due teste, la regista ne seguirà le vicissitudini sentimentali, destinate regolarmente al fallimento.

    Confrontandosi con varie tipologie di matrimonio, alcune reali e altre immaginarie, si troverà a fronteggiare inevitabilmente i limiti e i pregiudizi imposti a una donna da parte di una cosiddetta “natura” che il più delle volte si rivelerà piuttosto lo pseudonimo dietro cui si cela il contesto sociale di riferimento.

    La storia prevede come filo rosso una sorta di “coro” di sirene (quelle però dei miti antichi, simili ad arpie), le cui seduttive canzoni condurranno Zelma lungo le sue fantasie di amore eterno e felicità senza fine.

    Dopo il bellissimo “Rocks in my Pockets“, toccante e ironico ritratto di una vita (o più vite) in compagnia della Depressione, Signe Baumane ripropone  il suo personale e, ne siamo  certi, esilarante e intelligente punto di vista sull’amore ma, soprattutto, sulle cose “pazze” che gli uomini fanno in nome di esso… come, appunto, il matrimonio.

    L’anno che verrà

    Il 2016 verrà ricordato come l’ Annus Horribilis della Musica perchè ci ha portato via tanti musicisti eccellenti.
    Non posso però non ricordarlo come il mio anno Creativo per eccellenza.
    Non solo ho lavorato a tanti progetti interessantissimi (che ho incominciato a selezionare con molta più attenzione che in passato), ma ho speso molte energie per la mia Opera d’Arte più importante, il piccolo Leo che è nato appena un mese fa. Ovviamente sono stato supportato dalla mia co-autrice preferita, Agnese, la mamma di Leo.

    Ho anche rinnovato il mio canale http://www.youtube.com/kristiansensini nel quale, su suggerimento di molti di voi, ho iniziato pian piano a caricare dei video che riguardano il backstage del lavoro di compositore e soprattutto consigli e suggerimenti per chi sta intraprendendo questa carriera.

    Il 2017 si prospetta un anno pieno di impegni, ho inziato la pre-produzione di un film Italiano (“Il Bagno di Venere”), di una serie televisiva e del prossimo film di animazione di Signe Baumane con la quale ho avuto il piacere di collaborare per “Rocks in my Pockets”. Ho invece appena terminato la colonna sonora del cortometraggio “Sharpe” un piccolo capolavoro canadese girato interamente in 16mm.

    In primavera pubblicherò anche il mio secondo libro, dal titolo “Il Jazz è un gioco da Ragazzi”, un trattato dedicato ai musicisti ed agli insegnanti che spiega quanto sia importante e positivo (nella quotidianità e nell’insegnamento) imparare ad improvvisare…senza improvvisarsi. E’ il tentativo di riscoprire la creatività che è in ognuno di noi fin da bambini e che crescendo spesso dimentichiamo di coltivare.
    Il mio augurio per il nuovo anno è che possiate essere felici, in pace ed in salute, e che nel complicatissimo periodo storico nel quale ci troviamo a vivere possiamo riscoprire la compassione e l’ascolto del prossimo, vivendo con più attenzione possibile e pienezza ogni singolo momento presente.
    Del resto è tutto quello che abbiamo.

                In the animated film, Rocks in My Pockets, Latvian artist Signe Baumane tells the story of five separate women in her family (including herself) and their struggles with depression.  Tracing the lines of depression back in her family, Baumane begins with her grandmother, a peasant with eight children and moves through her family line until she arrives at her own bouts with depression and suicidal thoughts. 

    The musical score of Rocks in My Pockets was created by Italian composer, musician and music producer Kristian Sensini.  Studying classical flute and piano as a child, he began experimenting with electronic and computer generated music by the age of twelve.  He began venturing into film scoring in the early 2000s.  Working in several diverse film genres, including drama, animation, comedy, fantasy, thriller, documentary and more, Sensini has composed musical scores for nine feature films, including Hyde’s Secret Nightmare, The Museum of Wonders, The Becoming and more.

    The music of Rocks in My Pockets begins with a rather humorous undertone.  Orchestral in nature with pianos and guitars adding flavor to the score.  The opening track, How Not to Commit, has a calliope-like sound with shots of tuba inserted to offer up that comedic flavor.  Without knowing what the film is about, the listener thinks that perhaps the score is created for a comedy, until they listen further.  Coming upon the track Back Home, which offers a much slower version of the theme in the first track on the album, one wonders if something has occurred to cause the main character to pause and reflect.  An exotic flare, complete with chanting military voices, accompanies the military march sound in Russians, Germans, Partisans. 

    From that moment, there is a noticeable turn to the music.  It becomes less elaborate and more melancholy in Jealousyand Helpless Creatures and, though there is a bit of a pick up in the clarinet-led sound of Forest, the score never quite reaches that happy-go-lucky style of the first track on the album, becoming especially melancholy during Miranda’s Theme and The Bride.

    The score perfectly reflects the artist’s walk through depression, particularly the ups and downs of manic depression during which the individual experiences great highs and lows.  The upbeat moments are weighted down by the more morose parts of the soundtrack, yet the entire album is quite an enjoyable listen.  If you had no idea what the movie was about, one would still understand the story the music is trying to tell, making the Rocks in My Pockets Soundtrack perfect as the score of a film and as a stand alone album and well worth the listen.

    With Anomalisa premiering in many US markets this month, I thought it might be fun to profile another adult animated film from last year you might have missed. Produced, directed, written, and animated by the artist Signe Baumane, Rocks in My Pockets is a challenging film that is definitely not for everyone, but I’m glad I saw it.

    Signe Baumane is a Latvian artist, and Rocks in My Pockets profiles her family’s history with mental illness. Using paper-mache stop-motion and sketchy hand-drawn animation, Signe created over 30,000 drawings to tell the story of her family. Some may find it garish, but as an appreciator of complex art, I thought it was beautiful.

    The story of Signe’s family begins with her Grandmother Anna who had eight children and was a severe manic depressive. She attempts to commit suicide at one point in a lake but doesn’t have the rocks in her pockets so her attempt fails. This scene is obviously brutal, but it captures the madness, panic, and strange peace that happen inside the heads of those dealing with mental illness. I have never had a serious incident like Anna, but I could relate to the panic and the way she described her mania.

    We then learn about Anna’s eight children, and the Latvian proclivity for passing out pills to the mentally ill, particularly Valium and then putting them in asylums; thereby, either trying to dull or hide the problem rather than addressing it. I believe we are a little more advanced in the US but not as far along as we should be. The pills are helpful but can be over-prescribed, and the hiding and stigma still exist. Signe boldly reminds us of these problems.

    Next we are introduced to four of Signe’s cousins, their struggle, and finally Signe shares her own battle with schizophrenia. I was particularly moved by her recounting of the birth of her child. It was a transcendent experience for her but even something as happy as that couldn’t take away her problems including postpartum depression.

    Clearly Rocks in My Pockets is not for the faint of heart or those who don’t like something edgy and different. It is definitely vulgar, disturbing, and challenging to watch, but I found it daring and surprising. The animation is gorgeous and inventive. I loved how it moved; it felt like a sketch from inside Signe’s mind. Since all the stories are about women, the female bodies are intentionally drawn in a way so they look nude despite being fully clothed (except for one scene where a back is shown). You get a feeling Signe feels naked while drawing this story and that leads to her striking visuals.

    As with any bold artistic film, Rocks in My Pockets is not perfect. Signe decides to narrate the film herself which with her strong Latvian accent comes off as robotic and very off-putting and since there is no other dialogue, that is unfortunate. I also don’t know if we needed to hear about every cousin, Signe, and the Grandma. It may have worked better as a short because as it is you leave the experience exhausted. You are stimulated and maybe even inspired but exhausted.

    But all that said, probably my favorite part of the film is the ending. It does not give us any easy answers but says that sharing our stories is part of the solution. Signe says “Maybe it’s good to tell everybody so that they know what’s in their genes…It’s in the genes. You were designed to be crazy”. Maybe it is? Maybe we need to tell our stories and the stories of where we came from, so we get a better idea of how we are all ‘designed’. We can work together to overcome, even embrace these challenges whether it be in our mental or physical health. How great would that be?

    The score by Kristian Sensini is also very strong and worthy of its message; it fits the tone of the film perfectly.

    So if you are looking for something different and enjoy artistic, adult animation, then check out Rocks in My Pockets. I think you will really be moved by it and be glad you did.     In April 2015, seven young people who had been to a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) for help with their depression came together, with the aim of making a short, animated film about what it is like to suffer from depression as a teenager.

    A main feature of Signe Baumane’s movies is the pointedly handling of difficult and controversial subjects. She speaks frankly about issues a lot of people try to avoid, her biographical series Teat Beat of Sex (2007) is an impressive example for her creative cutoff of an inner and social censorship.Rocks in my Pockets – A crazy Quest for Sanity tells the story of a family. Starting in a not further specified present the narrative leads to Latvia in the 1920s where Anna, Baumane’s grandmother, faces a thoughtful future for she’s well educated and smart. Things become different when Anna marries an adventurous entrepreneur. From now on Anna is facing a life full of suppression. A suicide attempt follows and is kept silent in Baumane’s family for years.

    Sounds terrible. But still Rocks in my Pockets is an optimistic movie. For it tells not only the personal tragedies within one family that stands for a gazillion families. It also focuses on the process of an emancipation from a disease. Baumane’s voice-over tells the story of her family throughout the whole movie, the filmmaker appears as a protagonist in a crucial position for she is the one that breaks with the female family tradition of a desperate fate. Being conscious about her own depression the fear from a genetic loading is kept under control for Baumane becomes aware of her life as an artist in New York, full of opportunities and creative choices.

    Anni fa, la giovane artista Signe Baumane chiese al padre come fosse scomparsa la nonna. La risposta del genitore si rivelò evasiva, così come quelle degli altri parenti, interrogati in seguito. Signe comincia a sospettare allora che sua nonna abbia commesso il più terribile degli atti, togliendosi la vita. A questo dubbio se ne aggiunge un altro, che coinvolge la stessa giovane: e se nella sua famiglia aleggiasse la pazzia?

    Rocks In My Pockets – i sassi nelle tasche, quelli che i suicidi si caricano addosso prima di gettarsi in un fiume – è il tentativo artistico della stessa Signe Baumane di rispondere a una domanda, esorcizzando la paura di conoscere la risposta. Con un’originale tecnica che ricorre all’animazione tradizionale e a quella in stop-motion di figure in cartapesta, la film maker racconta una storia familiare che è allo stesso tempo un saggio poetico sulla malattia del Novecento: la depressione.

    Tutto ha inizio in Lettonia, negli anni Venti. Anna, una giovane donna acculturata, sposa un avventuroso imprenditore di 30 anni più anziano. Che la confina in una casa circondata dalla foresta, per gelosia, dove nonostante l’isolamento Anna dà alla luce otto figli, che cresce ed educa nonostante siano gli anni della Grande depressione e poi dell’invasione sovietica. Anna non si dà mai per vinta, è un modello di forza e perseveranza; eppure, qualcosa in lei è terribilmente sbagliato…

    Lo scoprirà Signe, sulla sua stessa pelle e su quella di altre tre cugine, anch’esse nipoti di Anna. Con un salto generazionale, la nonna ha trasmesso a tutte loro il proprio demone. Perché negarlo, perché fingere che non ci sia un legame biologico tra i loro disagi? Signe decide così di infrangere il tabù familiare e intraprendere un viaggio nella sua stessa depressione, in cerca di un modo per vivere – o convivere – con una terribile eredità.

    Feature film selections have been unveiled for the 2015 edition of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which runs this year June 15-20.

    This year, the Festival received a record number of submissions: 2,606 films coming from 95 different countries, including 73 features.

    La mia colonna sonora è la migliore tra i film stranieri del 2014? Obiettivamente no, tra i concorrenti c’erano musicisti molto più meritevoli di me, ma mi fa sinceramente piacere che tante persone abbiano votato e sostenuto il mio lavoro.
