“Composing ‘Lion’ with Director Signe Baumane’s lyrics was a truly inspiring journey. Signe’s words beautifully depicted a story of strength and determination, and my goal was to translate these emotions into music. We worked closely to create a composition that would deepen the film’s emotional impact, aiming to resonate with the audience on a profound level. The song was designed to instill a sense of empowerment and reflect the protagonist’s journey, achieved by blending orchestral and electronic elements for a dynamic and emotionally charged piece. It was a rewarding creative process, and I’m genuinely proud of the final outcome. I hope the audience finds ‘Lion’ as moving as we did when we crafted it,” Sensini stated.

“Collaborating with the remarkable performer Storm Large was a privilege. Her commanding and emotive voice added a new dimension to the song, perfectly conveying the raw emotions and strength within the lyrics. Storm’s performance brought the song to life, forging a deep connection with the audience and elevating the film’s storytelling. Working alongside Storm was a fantastic experience, and her contribution played a pivotal role in making “Lion” a memorable and impactful musical piece.”

Come bilanciare creatività e pubbliche relazioni?

Man mano che acquisisci fiducia, puoi gradualmente espandere i tuoi obiettivi.

Balancing Creativity and Public Relations in Film Composition

Film composers face a unique challenge in their profession. On one hand, they must dedicate themselves to the art of writing music, while on the other hand, they need to maintain an active presence in the industry and build relationships with directors, producers, and other professionals. Additionally, they must stay updated on current trends in the film and music worlds. This essay explores the importance of finding a balance between these two aspects and debates whether public relations or actual music writing holds greater significance in a film composer’s career.

    Maintaining the Creative Flow
The act of writing music is the core of a film composer’s work. It requires focus, creativity, and dedication. To maintain a consistent creative flow, composers should prioritize their time and energy for composing. Establishing a daily routine that includes dedicated writing sessions can help ensure that the music creation process remains a priority. Setting specific goals and deadlines for completing compositions can also be beneficial in maintaining productivity without sacrificing quality.

One way to maintain the creative flow is to create a designated workspace free from distractions. A composer’s workspace should be a sanctuary for inspiration and innovation. Moreover, setting aside uninterrupted blocks of time for composing allows the composer to delve deep into the creative process.

    Staying Updated with the Industry
While music composition is crucial, film composers also need to be aware of the industry’s trends, developments, and opportunities. This includes keeping up with the latest films, understanding the current cinematic style, and studying the works of other composers. By staying informed, composers can tailor their music to suit the demands of the industry and remain relevant.

Film composers can regularly watch films from various genres and periods to understand how music has evolved in the industry. They can also follow industry publications, blogs, and podcasts that discuss the latest trends and technological advancements in film scoring. Joining forums and online communities dedicated to film composers provides an opportunity to engage in discussions and stay updated on industry developments.

    Engaging in Public Relations
Public relations play a vital role in a film composer’s career. Building relationships with directors, producers, and other professionals is essential for securing projects and collaborations. Networking events, industry conferences, and online platforms provide opportunities for composers to connect with industry insiders. Sending well-crafted emails and showcasing a professional online presence can also help composers establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.

Effective public relations involve showcasing not just your musical skills but also your professionalism, reliability, and ability to collaborate effectively. It’s not just about self-promotion but also about establishing meaningful connections with individuals who share a passion for storytelling through music.

    Finding the Balance
To strike a balance between music writing and public relations, effective time management and prioritization are crucial. Composers can allocate specific time slots for composing and ensure they are free from distractions. They should also dedicate time to engage in public relations activities, such as attending industry events or reaching out to potential collaborators. By setting clear boundaries and adhering to a schedule, composers can ensure they devote ample time to both creative work and industry engagement.

Balancing these two facets of a composer’s career requires discipline and organization. Setting aside designated time for public relations efforts and respecting the time allocated for music composition is essential. A well-structured daily or weekly schedule can help composers avoid the pitfalls of neglecting either aspect.

    The Importance of Audience Reach
While creating music is the primary focus, it is equally important for a film composer to have an audience to appreciate their work. After all, the purpose of film composition is to enhance the visual storytelling experience and evoke emotions within the viewers. Building a substantial audience requires effective marketing strategies, promotional efforts, and collaborations with established directors and production houses. Public relations activities facilitate exposure, leading to increased opportunities for a composer’s work to be heard by a larger audience.

Film composers should consider collaborating with emerging directors and independent filmmakers to gain exposure. These partnerships can lead to a wider audience base and build a reputation in the industry. Furthermore, maintaining a strong online presence through social media, websites, and streaming platforms can help reach a global audience.

The Synergy between Music Writing and Public Relations
In reality, music writing and public relations are not mutually exclusive. They are interconnected and support each other. Effective public relations can help composers gain visibility, leading to more opportunities to write music for notable projects. Simultaneously, the quality of the music itself is the foundation of a composer’s success. Exceptional compositions will naturally attract attention and generate interest. Therefore, it is essential to strike a balance between the two, ensuring that both aspects receive adequate attention and effort.

The synergy between music writing and public relations creates a positive feedback loop. As a composer’s work gains recognition, more opportunities for collaborations arise. At the same time, the ability to create exceptional music is what ultimately distinguishes a composer and secures their place in the industry. In this delicate balance, composers find success by dedicating time to both their craft and their professional relationships.

Film composition is a delicate dance between creativity and public relations. Finding the right equilibrium is the key to a successful and fulfilling career as a film composer. While music writing remains the core of the profession, public relations activities are essential for networking, visibility, and audience reach. A successful film composer should never neglect one in favor of the other but instead strive to strike a harmonious balance that allows their music to shine and their career to flourish.

What happens if i’m dealing with social challenges?

What if you’re an anxious person or have social issues that make networking and public relations a daunting task? This article explores strategies for film composers who face social challenges, offering guidance on how to navigate public relations while managing anxiety and other social obstacles.

Understanding Social Challenges: Social challenges can manifest in various ways, such as social anxiety, shyness, introversion, or even neurodiversity conditions like autism. These challenges can make traditional networking and public relations activities feel overwhelming and uncomfortable. It’s crucial to acknowledge and accept these challenges as part of your unique journey as a film composer.

Embrace Your Authentic Self: The first step in managing social challenges is to embrace your authentic self. Recognize that your unique perspective and personality can be assets in the film composition world. Film scores often rely on emotional depth and subtlety, which can be heightened by your sensitivity and self-awareness.

Remember that many successful film composers have overcome social challenges and channeled their uniqueness into their work. Embracing your individuality can be a source of strength, leading to compositions that resonate deeply with audiences.

Set Realistic Goals: Setting realistic goals for your public relations efforts is crucial. While extroverted composers might thrive at large networking events, you can take a more measured approach. Start with achievable objectives, such as connecting with one or two industry professionals per event, or sending a specific number of outreach emails each week. As you gain confidence, you can gradually expand your goals.

Leverage Digital Platforms: In the digital age, you can build a strong online presence as a film composer. Utilize social media, personal websites, and online platforms to showcase your work, share your journey, and engage with the industry. These platforms allow you to connect with professionals in a more controlled and comfortable environment.

Online networking also provides an opportunity for asynchronous communication. You can craft thoughtful messages and responses at your own pace, reducing the pressure of real-time interactions.

Prepare and Rehearse: For in-person networking events, preparation is key. Rehearse your introduction, elevator pitch, and key talking points. Having a script or outline can boost your confidence when engaging with industry peers. Additionally, anticipate common questions and prepare responses in advance.

Practice in low-pressure environments, such as with trusted friends or family members. This can help you refine your communication skills and become more comfortable with the social aspects of your career.

Seek Support and Resources: There are numerous resources and support networks available to help film composers with social challenges. Consider joining groups or communities specifically designed for individuals facing similar obstacles. These networks can provide guidance, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.

Additionally, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Therapists or coaches can provide strategies for managing anxiety, building social skills, and enhancing your confidence.

Find Like-Minded Collaborators: When pursuing collaborations, seek like-minded directors and producers who appreciate your unique talents and understand your social challenges. Building relationships with individuals who share your vision and respect your communication style can lead to productive and harmonious collaborations.

Stay True to Your Vision: As you navigate the world of public relations, remember that your work speaks volumes. Stay true to your artistic vision and let your compositions convey your passion and creativity. Authenticity is a powerful tool in the film industry, and your music can do much of the talking for you.

La Brutta Verità di Come Vengono Realizzate le Colonne Sonore dei Film

    Articolo originale

“My Love Affair With Marriage” interview on KBOO FM

Link to the full interview https://kboo.fm/media/118307-signe-baumane

Here are the higlights about the song “Lion” and Storm Large involvment in the End Titles song:

“And there are musical numbers featured in the film, including the talented Storm Large from Portland.”

“Oh, Storm Large is absolutely incredible. Words fail me when trying to describe her. She is truly astounding and amazing. She performed the end credits song for the film. Before the screening, I always urge the audience to stay until the end credits because the song was specially written for the film. I wrote the lyrics, and our composer Kristian Sansini composed the music, while Storm Large delivered an exceptional performance. The song is truly remarkable. It also serves to answer any lingering questions or emotions the audience may have, such as the fate of Zelma. My hope is that viewers will leave the theater humming this song titled ‘Lion.’ Would you like to know how Storm became involved in singing the song?”

“Certainly, let’s delve into the collaboration that led to this musical masterpiece.”

“During the film’s production, which spanned seven years, we always knew that there would be a 24th song to cap it off. This song had to be different in style, a pop song, but I hadn’t written it yet. I kept it on the back burner. Then, while working on the sound in Luxembourg at the renowned Philopon sound studio, we were given a strict deadline. They needed the song by November 1st, and it was already July. So, I began working on the lyrics and sent them to our composer, Kristian. Unfortunately, he responded saying that he couldn’t compose anything to those lyrics. You see, all the previous lyrics I had written consisted of only three words, which suited a more free and jazzy folk style. However, this pop song required a rigid and unforgiving structure. He suggested I go back to the drawing board and even look up how to write a pop song online. So, I researched and squeezed my brain, but August passed by without much progress. When something is difficult, we tend to set it aside and focus on other urgent matters. However, as the November 1st deadline approached and we needed not only the song but also a singer, I managed to squeeze out the lyrics. My partner, Sturgis Warner, who is also a producer on the film, helped me measure the beats. We sent the lyrics to Kristian, and amazingly, he composed the song within six hours. Now, the challenge was finding a singer. Singers can be quite complicated to coordinate due to their schedules and agents, and some may not even have email. We tried reaching out to various people, but it proved difficult. Then, I remembered that my good friend Bill Clinton had connections to Pink Martini. I particularly admired China Forbes’ voice, but she wasn’t available. However, Pink Martini recommended Storm Large. I had seen a clip of her performance on America’s Got Talent before, and I couldn’t believe our luck. We presented the song to Storm, and she agreed to sing it. Since I couldn’t fly to Portland, we worked together through Zoom. Storm is such a remarkable talent that she doesn’t need much direction. She would come in and effortlessly hit the right notes, exceeding our expectations. It was an incredible experience working with her. As she was about to leave, she paid me the greatest compliment I’ve ever received. She said, ‘That was an interesting song,’ and I hold that compliment dear to my heart.”

“She possesses such incredible vocal power as well, doesn’t she?”

“Yes, absolutely. Storm has incredible power behind her voice. But what sets her apart is not just her vocal prowess; she is also an intelligent and daring performer. She goes beyond simply delivering a performance and dares to approach the edge where something truly electrifying begins. As an artist, I believe it’s important to be near that zone of danger, like being close to a live wire. And Storm embodies that artist who constantly reaches for that live wire.”

“Some audiences may expect a film called ‘My Love Affair with Marriage,’ with musical elements, to follow a familiar Disney princess story. However, this film takes a different path. It is set against the backdrop of historic events in Eastern Europe and spans a 23-year odyssey.”

“Yes, it’s a truly epic journey. It’s interesting that you mention Disney because mainstream audiences often associate animated feature films with children’s stories. However, I believe our audience is more sophisticated and open to different experiences.”

    Composizione, Cinema e Salute Mentale

    https://www.cmuse.org/seven-composers-and-their-mental-illnesses/

FEATURE | It’s Time To Talk About Classical Music’s Mental Health Problem

Anxieties and Depression Disorders in Composers’

    Mental Health and Film Composers

    Health And Wellbeing

È importante categorizzare i file e pianificare in anticipo.

    Composers and Mental Health

Hello everyone, it’s been a long time since I wanted to delve into this important topic concerning mental health, especially for us composers who work in such a creative yet stressful field. Finally, today I’ve decided to dedicate the right time and space to discuss a topic that is very dear to me and that I believe deserves more attention and awareness, especially in Italy.

As you know, this day is dedicated to the prevention of mental illnesses, and I believe there is no better time to talk openly about it. My intention is to shed light on the existing connection between psychological well-being, the compositional process, and the world of cinema. Before delving into the topic, I want to share some interesting studies and research that I’ve saved on my tablet to provide you with an initial overview of the issues we will address.

I don’t want to claim that all musicians and composers are to be considered “a bit crazy,” but the history of music presents us with numerous examples of great artists who have had to deal with disorders such as depression. Think of Mussorgsky, Berlioz, and Skrjabin, just to name a few; unfortunately, the list is much longer.

The point I want to emphasize is not about the label of the “eccentric composer” but rather a greater awareness of the particular sensitivity that distinguishes those who decide to pursue a career in the arts.

FEATURE | It’s Time To Talk About Classical Music’s Mental Health Problem

As a general premise, I would like to emphasize that (especially in Italy), we still talk too little about mental health, almost exclusively limiting it to news stories or emergencies. In our country, we tend to consider common issues as exceptions. If we paid the necessary attention to this important topic and normalized it as we do with dental hygiene or regular medical check-ups, we would undoubtedly benefit greatly.

Years ago, due to work-related stress, I experienced some significant revelations. I realized that we all have our weaknesses, and there is no shame in acknowledging them. I used to believe that stress was manageable and even productive, to the point of boasting about my limited hours of sleep and constant commitment. Unfortunately, this misconception, which is also common among many colleagues, especially on social media, only fuels a harmful myth that seriously harms our health.

I truly hope that many can endure the negative effects of stress for a long time. However, sooner or later, we will have to come to terms with our vulnerabilities, which manifest not only through psychological imbalances but also minor physical disorders, often underestimated in our society.

Now I want to share some interesting articles that have emerged in recent years, exploring topics such as “Anxiety and Depression Disorders in Composers” and “Mental Health of Film Composers.”

Anxieties and Depression Disorders in Composers’

    Mental Health and Film Composers

According to reliable statistics, composers of music for cinema are ten times more likely to suffer from anxiety and three times more likely to have sleep disorders compared to other professions.

The Australian Guild of Film Composers has conducted research to better understand the causes of this vulnerability. Among the factors identified are often low and irregular income, little job stability, a highly competitive environment, and the impostor syndrome, so common in our industry. Not to mention the constant pressure related to tight deadlines and the fear of rejection.

    Health And Wellbeing

In short, the profession of a composer is not just about being brilliant but also about being ready for opportunities and effectively managing stress.

We must be aware of our weaknesses and avoid being ashamed of them because mental health concerns everyone and does not indicate any personal fragility. If we feel in difficulty, speaking openly with friends, family, or an expert can be truly valuable. I hope that this reflection can help normalize a still too taboo topic, especially in Italy.

In the following article, practical advice is also provided:

    https://shesaid-so.medium.com/top-ten-tips-for-self-care-as-a-media-composer-e4ae627467b1

    1. “Play Instruments”
Play the piano, play the guitar, join a choir, play with friends, play alone. No matter what, we must play. It’s important to keep our skills up and remember to enjoy music. It doesn’t have to be just work; it can also be playtime.

    2. “Awareness”
Being aware of oneself and others is an incredibly helpful skill. It’s worth reminding ourselves that we are human, and people are different. Not everyone will react the same way to things. Being actively conscious of this can make us more confident, proactive, and positive.

    3. “Pilates”
Mental and physical health is a top priority. Eating well, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep are essential. Regular exercise and attention to posture are also important.

    4. “Outdoor Time”
We should try to get fresh air every day, even if it’s just taking out the trash. In a freelance career, we often take advantage of working all hours because we can and because we love our jobs. But we have to remember the positive effects of stepping outside in the fresh air.

    5. “Dress Up to Go to Work”
Even if we work from home, dressing instead of staying in pajamas can have a positive effect on productivity. It makes us feel like we are going to work and can make it easier to go outdoors.

    6. “Be Organized”
Being organized in every aspect of life can greatly help with productivity. We should plan our days, separate time for emails, time without emails, and dedicated time for composing. Categorizing files and thinking ahead are also important.

    7. “It’s OK to Ask for Help”
We must reach out for advice if we need it. Whether we have writer’s block or need help with something, we must not be afraid to talk to people.

    8. “Get a Routine and Be Focused”
Creating habits can free up mental space for creativity. Being focused can be facilitated by making notes on what’s cluttering our minds.

    9. “Understand Structuring Downtime”
After a project, it’s important to plan downtime to avoid burnout. Taking a break, going on a holiday, or spending time with friends and family is essential for recharging.

    10. “Prosperity Instead of Scarcity”
We shouldn’t compare ourselves to other composers. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and enters the world of media composition in different ways. Collaboration and growth can result from embracing these differences.

In summary, these tips emphasize the importance of self-care, awareness, organization, and seeking help when needed. They also promote the importance of balancing work with leisure and avoiding comparison with others to foster collaboration and personal growth.

Here is another article from PRS, the practice of Music and its enjoyment can certainly alleviate stress, a different story for those who decide to pursue a musical career:

“Unseen films” Interview “My Love Affair With Marriage”

    http://www.unseenfilms.net/2023/10/signe-baumane-talks-about-her-film-my.html

UNSEEN: I’m in awe of the music. When you wrote the script did you have all the songs done? I know you wrote the lyrics and Kristian Sensini wrote the music. But the songs drive the film, and they are Broadway quality…and the one thing I was thinking when it was done was that this was great, that you could put this on a Broadway stage…

SIGNE: Really? I was thinking the same. I was think that when we released the film we had to go on Broadway.

UNSEEN: No it’s in my review which you haven’t see because of the embargo, but I was think the film ends and the door open and that is just such a Broadway moment, the moment everyone screams and yells and leaps to their feet and cheers and I’m like “oh my god this is Broadway musical”, it has to go to Broadway

SIGNE; I’m glad you’re saying that. Yea of course I don’t have any idea how to put it on Broadway but maybe somebody sees it and understands it and understands what you understood.

Let me talk a little bit about the music. The music, the songs, the score and everything were written by this very very talented composed in Italy Kristian Sensini and I worked with him on my previous animated film ROCKS IN MY POCKET and I thought he was very talented but I didn’t know if he could write songs. So when I wrote the script I put 33 songs in the script, I wrote the lyrics and all that. And I sent him the script and I asked him if would be able to write these songs. And he looked at it and said yea, no problem. And so he wrote these songs and I was just amazed at how he was able to do that because it’s a special talent to do that. And he has the ability to do as you say the Broadway, the comedy the lightness, the darkness so he’s a very versatile composer.

And then after the film was done he wrote the score and I’m very happy with the score for the biology part, I feel that its very moody mysterious, the kind of a drumbeat and I’m very happy about that discovery. So yea Kristian Sensini’s song writing is really an essentially part of the film. I don’t know how, I can not imagine the film to be with out his particular sensibility in music.

UNSEEN: It drives the film. It wouldn’t work without it. I mean that in a good way. It’s clearly your film but you brought in this wonderful composer and a killer voice cast. It’s a beautiful beautiful film and if you pulled any of it out it wouldn’t work. If you pulled the songs out it wouldn’t work. You hit everything perfectly.

SIGNE: And the end credits song, we wrote that at the end, when the film was done and I told him I need a three and a half minute song and he said send me the lyrics and I sent him like three pages of lyrics and he sent it back to me and said this is shit I can not write a song to that. So we are true collaborators,it had to be together, the words and music have to come together. And he was really crucial that he really pushed myself together to write lyrics that he could work with. And then Storm Large, I don’t know if you know her work, she’s this amazing singer. I hear the song and it blows me away, the power of her voice.
