Introduction
Role-playing games enter the classroom
Bringing role-playing games into an educational setting does not mean turning a lesson into an improvised game, nor using play as a simple reward. It means building a shared narrative space in which children and young people can observe, discuss, make decisions and experience their consequences.
Role-playing games develop listening, speaking, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving. Every participant contributes to the story and discovers that there is never only one way to overcome an obstacle: you can negotiate, explore, distract, cooperate, invent or choose to act.
At school, the rules need to be adapted to age and attention span without impoverishing the experience. The heart of the game remains intact: imagining together, taking narrative responsibility and learning to value other people’s ideas.
