Listening, choices, consequences: when D&D enters the classroom
GdR Players devotes an interview to the Dadi, Maghi e Draghi project: from classroom experience to the skills that emerge at the table, with advice for those who want to begin with young people and beginners.
From experience to teaching
Why bring role-playing into the classroom
The interview explains how the project was born from the meeting of two real experiences: years of role-playing and everyday work in secondary school. The starting point was not to build a theory, but to observe how listening, collaboration, decision-making, storytelling and conflict management emerge spontaneously during a session.
The first school experiment reduced the rules to their essentials and placed students in front of problems to solve together. The clearest result was increased participation: an active role within the story makes choices meaningful and turns mistakes into new narrative directions.
Skills
Listening, cooperation, argumentation, problem-solving and the ability to participate in a collective decision.
For beginners
Simplify the rules, avoid adventures with only one solution and create space for people who do not always want to be at the center of the scene.
More than combat
Negotiation, exploration, clues, diplomacy and the possibility of avoiding conflict are especially fruitful elements with younger players.
Who the book is for
Teachers, educators and parents who are new to role-playing, as well as experienced players interested in rethinking RPGs from an educational perspective.
From the interview
“A failed roll does not end the experience; it changes it.”
This is one of the project’s central ideas: failure not as interruption, but as narrative material and an opportunity to choose a new path.
